Bubble Bum was my final project in an upper-division graphic design branding identity class at the University of California, Davis; the task was to create a brand identity and graphic standard for a made up food product derived from an edible insect ingredient assigned to you. I was assigned the honey pot ant: an ant found in Australia that collects honey in its enlarged abdomen and is consumed as a sweet delicacy by the aboriginal people. Extensive research was a major part of this project to inform every design choice made in everything from logo creation and sustainable package design to advertising and business systems. In my final concept, I was inspired by the abdomens of these ants – which are about the same size and shape as tapioca pearls used for boba – to create a bubble milk tea sweetened with honey these ants collect, and a playful brand identity to match.
